Final Log Entry for
Bob Caldwell

On Saturday, November 7th, 2009, Bob Caldwell was engaged to appear as Capt.
Jean-Luc Picard at the birthday party of Beverly Babcock, a 72-year-old Trekker
in Glendora, California. It was Bob's first - and, in a sad twist of irony - last
engagement. Upon his return, he filed this report.
I arrived at the restaurant at 6:30 for the 7 o'clock dinner and sat in the car until
6:55. As I walked to the front door, Philip Babcock came out and, of course,
recognized me. He reserved a private room and as we entered I saw his mother
sitting at the table (she was wearing a Star Trek comm badge on her jacket). She
didn't know that Philip had hired me. When we entered the room, I said "Happy
Birthday, Beverly" and leaned down to kiss her on the cheek. Her response was
"Oh my God!" I think, at first, she thought I was really Patrick Stewart. I presented
her with the 8" Captain Picard doll that my son gave to me on Father's Day 15
years ago. She cried. Beverly is terminally ill with cancer. I don't know the details,
and didn't ask, but my impression is that it's lung cancer. She has attended nearly
all of the Star Trek conventions over the years and has Patrick Stewart's
autograph from one of the few conventions that he attended. She was in Vegas for
the convention last August.
Philip's sister, Mary, and her husband were there and two friends of Beverly. So,
the seven of us sat for two hours talking about Star Trek. A good time was had by
all. When we were leaving the restaurant, Beverly thanked me and began crying.
She asked me if I really wanted to part with the doll. I told her that I wanted her to
have it, kissed her on the cheek, and wished her happy birthday. This was her
72nd birthday and will be her last.
